The Big Bang Theory is an American sitcom by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady which has been broadcast on the US television network CBS since September 24, 2007. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Televison and Chuck Lorre Productions.
Die Plot
The Big Bang Theory series is about two intelligent young physicists Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper, whose apartment is directly across from that of the pretty waitress Penny. Thereby the geeky nature of the two young nerds is contrasted to the naivete, but also to the social skill and the common sense of their stereotyped blonde neighbor. This trio is complemented by Howard, a Jewish engineer, and Rajesh, an Indian astrophysicist. Not only their great passion for comics, science fiction (Star Trek in particular), but also the sciences in general and in all their facets connects the four nerds and their friends. In addition, they all work at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Los Angeles.
Broadcast
The initial broadcast was on September 24, 2007 on the U.S. television network CBS. The first season ran there until May 19, 2008. The second ran between September 22, 2008 and May 11, 2009, likewise on CBS. In March 2009, the series was then renewed for two additional seasons. The third season ran between September 21, 2009 and May 24, 2010. The fourth season has been broadcast on CBS since September 23, 2010.
On January 12, 2011 CBS extended the series early for three further season. With that the series will reach a total of seven seasons and will be able to be seen unto the 2013/2014 season.
In Germany the first season was broadcst on ProSieben between July 11th and September 26th, 2009. On average the first season was watched by 11.1 percent of the relevant advertising target group of 14 to 49 year-olds. The broadcast of the second season followed from October 10th to December 19th, 2009. The broadcast of the third season could be seen on ProSieben from the 7th to the 22nd of February 2011. The quotas of third season were on average at 12.9 percent of the target group and 11.9 percent of the market share.
In Austria, ORF 1 broadcast the first season between March 13th and May 22nd 2010. ORF 1 broadcast the first five episodes of the second season from May 22nd to June 5th, 2010 and continued them in June 10, 2010.
Awards
- The series was also honored with the Television Critics Association Award in 2009 and the People's Choice Award 2010 respectively as Outstanding Achievement in Comedy and as Favorite TV Comedy.
